Eastern Amazon Cruise
Rumo Norte Expeditions in association with Atakan Amazon offer you unforgettable tour in the northeast of the Amazon in Pará State. You will participate for 5 days of an Amazon river and Tapajós river cruise full of adventures aboard of a modern and comfortable ship. Led by our expedition team composed by experienced tour leaders and wildlife specialists. This trip in the Amazon offers opportunities for kayaking, searching for Amazon dolphins, hiking, speedboat cruises, snorkeling, and a special gourmet cuisine prepared during gorgeous Amazon sunsets. You will have the comfort of your home surrounded by nature almost untouched in some of the most beautiful east rivers of the Amazon. You will be in contact with communities that live in protected areas of the Amazon forest.
Itinerary
1st Day – Belém / Embark Ship
Arrival in Belém, followed by transfer to the port and embark on Atakan ship cruise. Free day for optional activities. In the evening, meeting on the deck of the ship in preparation for the start of the journey.
2nd Day – Caxiuanã National Forest
Breakfast served on board. The cruise is on Caxiuanã river bay in Caxiuanã National Forest, an area of environmental preservation with 330.000 hectares of native forest and low population density. During the day you have the opportunity to closely observe the flora and fauna of the Amazon. You visit one of three native communities that inhabit the park and live of farming, fishing, hunting and extract of products of the forest. Furthermore, you will explore some rivers within the forest by kayaks or speedboats, which lead you to have a closer contact with terrestrial and aquatic animals that live in the jungle. Bird and wildlife watching here can be an unforgettable experience.
3rd Day – Monte Alegre State Park
Arrival at Monte Alegre Bay at sunrise. After breakfast you hike to Monte Alegre State Park. There you appreciate its mountains, valleys, caves with panels of rock paintings and archaeological sites with more than 12 thousand years. You visit Stone Pilão, the main rock formation, to enjoy an excellent panoramic view of the Amazon River and forest of varzeas (a type of seasonally flooded forests growing along rivers in the Amazon). For those who prefer more fun and a closer contact with nature, mountain-bikes are an excellent option for doing this tour. In the evening the cruise begins heading toward Tapajós River.
4th Day – Tapajós National Forest
Arrival at Tapajos National Forest during sunrise. This forest has an area of 600,000 hectares of primary forest, beaches, traditional communities, igarapé (small stream) and igapós (type of Amazonian flooded forest that occurs along black- and white-water rivers). At Jamaraquá village, one of the communities in the area, you begin a 3 to 4 hours hiking into the forest. You find trees with high medicinal value and food for the locals, such as Piquiá and the gigantic Sumaúma. Lunch happens in a native Jamaraqua family house. After lunch, you stop for snorkeling in a small Jamaraquá stream. There you find a natural aquarium full of fish and beautiful vegetations. In mid-afternoon a visit to Maguari, community whose main economy is based on sustainable usage of natural forest resources to find handmade craft products made of latex - the "leather plant" extracted from rubber trees.
5th Dia – Alter do Chão, Santarém
At Sunrise, Alter do Chão in Santarém town. Free day to explore the area by biking, hiking, kayaking, or go shopping until departure to Santarém airport.

Any additional changes on transportation or lodging will not be covered by Rumo Norte Expeditions. In addition, any service or activities not used will not be refunded because we pay our providers ahead of time.

If you decide not to do one of the activities includes in this itinerary, the value will not be reimbursed.
Not included
Air ticket from Belém to Santarém or from Santarém to Belém, according departure dates (request aditional price for tickets not included); Personal expenses such as: beverages, phone calls etc; Travel insurance and any other service and activity not mention above are at additional cost. Ask for a list of optional activities and services available for this trip.
Transportation
Transfers and trips on land use private 4x4 wheel cars, vans or mini vans. It depends on the size of the group.
Money to spend
Personal expenses: It is recommended that you bring money with you. You will only have a chance to get cash at ATMs in Belém or Santarém before embakment or after disembarkment. Credit cards is accept on board and in some restaurants in the cities mention above. However, avoid bringing to much money during your trip.
Budget: All meals during this trip is included. Only on land save R$ 25 to R$ 45 for meals not included and R$ 5 to R$ 15 for beverages.
Climate
From January to June is the rain season and from July to December is the dry season, our Amazonian summer. From September to December the beaches arise in the riverbed and the rain flow is lesser.
What to bring
We recommend you to bring a small backpack, to take your water and small equipments; raincover, hat or cap, eyeglasses of sun, light clothes, sandals for water sports, a comfortable tennis for hiking; sun screen; insect repellent; your habitual medicines; plastic bag or waterproof package to put in your documents, papers, camera and binoculars; water bottle or any other water system filter and your favorite snack. Even though we give some suggestion, we encourage you to bring only things you can carry.

Yellow fever vaccine is recommended, 10 days before embark to Amazon.
