Crossing Marajo Island into the Indian way until Amazon boretide

Reserve 7 days to discover this fantastic Marajo Island. Marajó Island is the world’s largest river sea island. It is located in the Amazon River delta surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean at North and by the Amazon River at South portion. Therefore, the wildlife diversity is amazing. Fauna and flora are exotic and the scenery changes depending on the season, dry or rainy.

Itinerary

1st Day- Belém/ Marajó
In the morning, hotels transfer to Belem port. Embarkment on a ferry to Marajo. Arrival followed by check-in at lodge in Soure city. In the afternoon, a walk in the small city. The tour includes a visit to a tannery shop, Marajoara ceramic shop and beaches from sweet water. Sunset at the hotel. At night, performance of traditional folck dance brought by the slaves to the region.

2nd Day – Cachoeira do Arari/Faz. São Joaquim
Departure early in the morning to Cachoeira do Arari city. Once there, visit to Marajo Museum. Then expedition orientation in preparation to start paddling kayaks against the river on Arari River. Along the way, you watch different species that habitat Marajo fauna, such as Guara (“Scarlet Ibis”), flooded fields and traditional farms of the region. Sleep over at São Joaquim Farm.

3rd Day - São Joaquim Farm/ Santa Cruz do Arari
Early monrning start paddle to Santa Cruz city. On the way, you see Jenipapo village that is a village build on the water where the native move around by boat or walking on wood bridges. At this point because of the narrow vegetation, the trip continues on a boat not on kayaks. Sleep over at Santa Cruz city.

4th Day – Portage kayaks to Sto. Elias Farm
On board of a boat, you cross flooded farm fields and Moccoes river. Moccoes has dark and cold water, high forest, delicious guava trees and water lilis. Sleep over at Sto. Elias Farm.

5th Day – Faz. Sto Elias / Arapixi Community
After breakfast, kayak expedition continues paddling on Egito River. This river has strong tides, and intense vegetaon. At the end of the day arrival at Arapixi village, north of Marajo Island.

6th Day – Portage to Mexiana Island
On board of a boat, you cross Sul Channel to Mexiana Island. Once there, by kayak you paddle on the crooked Jacare River to check-in at Marajo Park Resort. Pirarucu fish for lunch, the biggest fish of the Amazon. Afternoon free.

7th Day – Mexiana/Belem
Departure according to the tides to observe the boretide fenomenon (pororoca) on the Amazon River. At the end of the day, return to Belem by plane with sightseeing. Arrival around 5 pm.

Itinerary Notes:

The itinerary above is accurate. However, it can be different from some of material previously printed because we are constantly adjusting our trips to better server our clients. These changes are based on customer suggestions or researches. Therefore, our tour guide will keep you informed of any changes that might occur during the first meeting previous departure.

Any additional changes on transportation or lodging will not be covered by Rumo Norte Expeditions. In addition, any service or activities not used will not be refunded because we pay our providers ahead of time.

Land transfers in Belém and Marajó; 1 night lodge at Paracauary Eco Pousada, in Soure; 1 night lodge at Marajó Park Resort; 4 nights camping accomodations for two; all meals included (breakfast, lunch and dinner); all tours as indicated; ferry and air tickets to go and back; Professional instruction and guiding in English; Tandem kayaks w/ rudders (more stable & easier to paddle); regional boat for support and portages; all kayaking equipment are provided. Single kayak must be requested in advance. If you decide not to do one of the activities includes in this itinerary, the value will not be reimbursed.

Not included

Personal expenses such as: beverages, phone calls etc during staying in the hotels; Travel insurance and Any other service and activity not mention above are at additional cost. Ask for a list of optional activities and services available for this trip.

Transportation

Transfers and trips on land use private 4x4 wheel cars, vans or mini vans. It depends on the size of the group.

Money to spend

Personal expenses: It is recommended that you bring money with you. You will only have a chance to get cash at ATMs in Belém and Soure city, in the begining of the trip. Credit cards only at the hotels. However, avoid bringing to much money during your trip.

Budget: all meals is included. Per day, save BR$ 5 to BR$ 15 for your snacks or beverages not included.

Climate

The Marajó Island is located below of the equator line, have tropical climate with fresh mornings and afternoons, but when the noon approaches the temperature grows up to 36 and 38 degrees Celsius. Its dry season begin in July, when the fields start to dry, until December, when the landscape transforms, the fields are completely dry and cracked; the rainy station goes from January until June, when the island is partially flooded and forms a great full wildlife wetland.

What to bring

We recommend you to bring a small backpack, to take your water and small equipments; raincover, hat or cap, eyeglasses of sun, light clothes, sandals for water sports, a comfortable tennis for hiking; sun screen; insect repellent; your habitual medicines; plastic bag or waterproof package to put in your documents, papers, camera and binoculars; water bottle or any other water system filter and your favorite snack. Even though we give some suggestion, we encourage you to bring only things you can carry.

Further information

Yellow fever vaccine is recommended, 10 days before embark to Amazon.

Single Travelers: Please be advised that single accommodations may be unavailable or a limited number of spaces for single travelers.
